The Magna Carta
For years and years the parliament and a kings from previous times fought over rights and power on a regular basis. The only thing the two had in common was that they both wanted a lot of power. Over the years sometimes the parliament would gain power, than the king would gain power and it was an on going battle. After numerous years of disagreement between kings and the parliament that all was put to rest for a small amount of time. After years of disagreement the parliament decided to reason with a king named John. The purpose of the Magna Carta was to document the equalities of King Johns power and the parlements power and give them the same amount of power. The Magna Carta confirmed that both king John and the parliament would give the same amount of justice, parliamentary assent for taxation, and scutage limitations.
the English civil war
The English Civil War had a great impact on our lives today but I’ll get to that later. First I will tell you how this all started. You see King Charles was an obnoxious, self centered king who didn’t care about those below him and wanted everything for himself.
Till one day he was in desperate need of money from the Parliament for his own needs and to pay his army. But the Parliament shot him down, King Charles was so angry he got rid of the Parliament and ruled without it for years till he got so desperate he recalled the Parliament. Once again he was shot down and he continued to rule without it. Till the Parliament had enough of King Charles and killed two of Charles advisors and starting removing many of the kings powers.

Once Charles had enough, him and his army went after the parliament and arrested 5 members. After that the Parliament put together their own army and went after King Charles. Charles was the one who started the Civil war during 1642. Till he was captured four years later and turned into the Parliament. During 1649 he went to trial at the Parliament and was found guilty and sentenced to death.
This was a great time in history for people because when Charles was the king, people had no freedom of speech or legal rights. Which wasn’t fair to the people. To this day the Parliament is still at the top and holds all the power instead of the King and Queen. However the way things are now, are a lot more reasonable than before.
We even still live by certain things to remember the significance of this war. For example the Parliamentary Traditions in Canada are that members of parliament act as though they are dragging the speaker to the his chair, Black Rod must knock 3 times to enter, and the Mace is still a symbol of authority and is displayed in the house commons.
